Black History Month is an annual observance that originated in the US but is now officially recognised by governments in Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands and the UK. The month provides an opportunity for full recognition of the contributions and achievements of the UK’s black community.

Leland Melvin is a retired NASA astronaut and a former wide receiver for the NFL. He was born in Lynchburg in 1964 and attended Heritage High School. After graduation, he went to the University of Richmond and eventually received his Master of Science degree in Material Science Engineering from the University of Virginia. In 1986, he was drafted to the Detroit Lions football team followed by the Dallas Cowboys. After an injury, Melvin retired from sports. By 1989, he was working as an engineer for NASA and was chosen as an astronaut in 1998. He went into space twice, both times aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis. Today he is an author and lecturer, and still resides in Lynchburg. He has appeared on the TV shows Top Chef, Bizarre Foods, and the Dog Whisperer.
